Accident Notification: Worker caught between crawler crane and metal barricade

On 22 November 2019 around 9am, a worker was caught between metal barricades and the counterweight of a crawler crane when the crane rotated. The worker was conveyed to the hospital where he subsequently passed away.

The Ministry of Manpower has commenced investigations into the accident.

Employers, principals and contractors performing similar operations are advised to manage foreseeable risks arising from the operation of crawler cranes at the worksite. If various construction and crane-related activities are to be carried out at the same time, persons in control of the work are required to plan and coordinate their activities so that work is executed in a safe manner.

Workers are reminded to stay clear of hazardous work zones and must be made aware of the possible hazards that could be encountered when multiple activities are taking place within the same work area. For example, lifting zones, including work areas and the immediate vicinity surrounding the lifting equipment, should be cordoned off to prevent workers from entering hazardous work zones with operating equipment.
