Accident Notification: Worker fell from height
On 1 December 2018 around 1pm, a worker was carrying out works on the third storey of a private dwelling under construction. At about 1:30pm, he was found lying unconscious on the floor of the second storey by a co-worker. He was conveyed to the hospital where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries that same afternoon.
The Ministry of Manpower has commenced investigations into the accident.
Contractors and workers performing similar work activities are advised to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves when performing work at heights. Adequate fall preventive measures, such as effective guard rails and barricades, should be put in place when working near open sides to eliminate the risks of falling off. Suitable fall protection or fall arrest equipment should also be provided and used by workers when working at heights.

On 2 December 2018 around 2pm, a group of workers was connecting electrical cables between two junction boxes on a vessel. When the connections were completed, a worker proceeded to turn on the main switch. Another worker, who was standing beside the junction box, suddenly collapsed thereafter. He was conveyed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Contractors performing similar work activities are advised to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves when performing electrical works. Control measures must be put in place to prevent any reasonably foreseeable risk of electrocution. Safe work procedures should be established during the connection of electrical cables. Only trained and authorised personnel should carry out electrical works. Appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) such as electrical-resistant or insulating rubber hand gloves and rubber-soled boots should also be provided and used by workers handling electrical components.
