Accident Notification: Worker fell within cargo hold of vessel

On 26 November 2019 around 8:55am, a worker was within a cargo hold of a vessel under repair, when he fell over the edge of a deck within the cargo hold to its bottom. The height of fall was about 9.3 metres. He was conveyed to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The Ministry of Manpower has commenced investigations into the accident.

Employers, contractors and workers performing similar work activities are advised to take the necessary precautions and measures to protect themselves from fall from height risks. A Fall Prevention Plan must be established and control measures (e.g. guard rails or travel restraint systems) implemented to eliminate or reduce the risk of falls prior to work commencement. Ensure that all work areas are sufficiently illuminated and free of slips, trips and falls hazards. Workers must not be allowed to enter confined spaces unless a valid entry permit has been issued.
