Accident Notification: Worker struck by falling formwork structure component
On 11 January 2020, four workers were tasked to shift a formwork structure. While they were moving the formwork structure, a runner fell from the top of the formwork structure and struck one of the workers. The worker was conveyed to the hospital where he subsequently passed away.
The Ministry of Manpower has commenced investigations into the accident.
The industry is reminded to conduct a comprehensive Risk Assessment for all construction work activities. Formwork structures must be built and installed in accordance to manufacturers’ recommendations. Where shifting of formwork structures is being carried out, manufacturers’ recommended procedures should be adhered to. A trained formwork supervisor must be appointed to ensure that all the necessary checks are carried out prior to any construction, erection, alteration or dismantling works. All loose components of the formwork structure must be properly secured to prevent accidental dislodgement.
