Be vigilant: Five fatalities in construction sector since
1 Jan 2019
Since 1 Jan 2019, there were eight workplace fatalities with five from the construction sector:
No. | Date | Accident Description |
1 | 14 January | Worker found dead in lift car |
2 | 22 January | Worker died while carrying out painting works |
3 | 22 February | Worker killed by tipper truck |
4 | 04 March | Workers fell with collapsed floor slab |
5 | 09 March | Worker struck by sheet pile |
Mr Yam Ah Mee, Chairman of the WSH Council (Construction and Landscape) Committee urges all employers to take time to take care of their workplace safety and health, “Companies should review their risk assessments, identify any possible hazards that may have been overlooked, and take the necessary measures to mitigate risks. I urge companies to actively take ownership of WSH. Together we can prevent workplace accidents and achieve an injury-free workplace.”
Workers must also play their part. They should be vigilant of their surroundings and report any unsafe workplace conditions, practices and/or behaviours, so that timely and appropriate interventions can be taken to address and eliminate risks.

Working Safely with Your Contractors
Contractors are frequently engaged by organisations for specialised or non-routine work activities. Often, there are several contractors performing multiple work activities on-site at any one time. Thus, managing the safety and health of everyone at the workplace can prove challenging.
The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council has published an article on Working Safely with Your Contractors, which highlights the need for an effective contractor management process at the workplace to minimise unnecessary risks.
