Dear Valued ASPRI Members

Companies committed to prevent amputations at their workplaces // bizSAFE Awards 2020 – Applications closing soon! // Industry Workshops

More than 100 workers lose their limbs every year in the manufacturing industry.

This prompted the Singapore Metal and Machinery Association (SMMA), Singapore Food Manufacturers’ Association (SFMA) and Singapore Furniture Industries Council (SFIC) to collaborate with the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council to organise two purposeful workshops for the senior management of their members to raise their WSH awareness and prevent accidents. As a result, more than 50 manufacturing companies pledged their commitment to prevent amputations at work during the workshops on 29 and 30 July 2019.

SMMA’s Vice President Lim Chin Keong and SFMA’s President, Mr David Tan Lye Hock stressed in their opening addresses that “employees are the most important asset of every organisation. When an employee is injured, business operations will be affected”. They therefore urged all employers to show their commitment to provide a safe and healthy environment for their workers at their respective workplaces. The participants also formulated WSH policies for their companies with an emphasis on machinery safety and pledged their commitment to prevent amputations at their workplaces.

The WSH Council is supportive of these outreach events as part of the year-long efforts towards Safe Hands. Organisations can inculcate the importance of WSH to their employees and new hires with these resources:

  • Training slides on Common hazards in the food manufacturing sector
  • Training slides on Common hazards in the woodworking sector
  • Posters on the 6 Basic WSH Rules for Food Manufacturing, Working with Machines and Woodworking
