The Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council and Singapore Polytechnic organised the Forum on WSH Education @ IHLs on 7 October 2019. The primary purpose of the Forum was to provide a platform for the academia, industry leaders and employers to share and exchange ideas to further accentuate WSH education for our tertiary students.
In his opening address, Mr John Ng, Chairman of the WSH Council, highlighted that “youths are the future of Singapore and what they learn in schools today will form the foundation on how they will shape the workplaces of tomorrow”. He shared three possible approaches for educators to instil WSH ownership amongst their students:
- Create an environment that is focused on WSH;
- Incorporate WSH elements such as risk management and design for safety into their course curricula or campus learning; and
- Share WSH resources with the students and encourage them to learn more about WSH through e-learning.
Ms Lilian Tan, Senior Vice President, Human Capital of SATS Ltd, shared from an employer’s perspective on the role that IHLs could play in preparing the future workforce for WSH challenges at workplaces. Professor Chia Kee Seng, Chairman, WSH Council (Workplace Health) Committee, provided his insights on Total WSH. He stressed that it is important for our workforce to have a greater appreciation on the value of personal health as they pursue their career.
During the panel discussion, Mr Silas Sng, Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health and Co-Chairman, WSH Council (Workplace Health) Committee shared with the audience on the national direction and strategies to promote and cultivate a sound WSH culture in Singapore. He also emphasised on the need to work with IHLs in inculcating the WSH message.
Dr Peck Thian Guan, Chairman of Working Group on WSH in Higher Education and Research, who was the moderator for the panel discussion, closed the Forum with the call for all IHLs to strengthen their efforts in cultivating greater WSH ownership in students before they enter the workforce.
About 200 management, academics and OSH personnel of the Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and industry partners attended the event.

Nominate your Exemplary Employer for the Tripartite Alliance Award 2020
The Tripartite Alliance Award (TA Award) recognises exemplary organisations that have effectively implemented fair, responsible and progressive employment practices. To take part in the TA Award, employers must first be nominated by their employees, union, service provider or extended workforce.
The TA Award, conferred by the tripartite partners, namely the Ministry of Manpower, National Trades Union Congress and Singapore National Employers Federation, celebrates organisations who excel in building fair and progressive workplaces and keep employees at the heart of their progress. Progressive employment practices include good HR strategies, policies, programmes and practices that create and sustain an inclusive workplace.
There are four categories under the TA Award:
- Fair and Progressive Employment Practices
- Work-Life Excellence
- Age Inclusive Practices
- Responsible Best Sourcing
The TA Award is open to all Singapore-based organisations who have adopted the required Tripartite Standards and completed the Fair and Progressive Employment Index.
