Dear Valued ASPRI Members,

Launch of Skills Framework for Workplace Safety and Health // Industry Workshop

Minister for Manpower Mrs Josephine Teo launched the Skills Framework for Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) at the 17th Singapore Institution of Safety Officers (SISO) WSHO Conference on 24 October 2019.

The WSH Skills Framework supports the WSH 2028 vision to reduce the workplace fatal injury rate to less than one death per 100,000 workers, making Singapore a country renowned for best practices in WSH with a healthy workforce in safe workplaces. It seeks to guide WSH officers in their career so that they can make a greater impact in their company’s WSH performance. The information provided to WSH Officers includes the career pathways, occupations/job roles, as well as existing and emerging skills and competency requirements.

Mrs Teo stressed in her speech the key roles played by WSH Officers in keeping workplaces safe and health. She suggested three ways WSH Officers can adopt to impact the work that they do and progress in their careers:

  • Leverage on soft skills such as communication, decision-making and leadership skills to promote greater WSH ownership among employers and workers. Combining soft skills with domain knowledge will help to foster a robust culture of care, trust and prevention more easily across all levels.
  • Be a strong advocate for improving health at the workplace by stepping up on workplace health promotion initiatives. One easy way to start is by engaging a Total WSH service provider appointed by the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) to provide safety consultancy, and health screening and coaching services.
  • Incorporate technology into work processes or training to transform operations and boost workplace safety.

The new Skills Framework for WSH is jointly developed by SkillsFuture Singapore, the WSH Council, Workforce Singapore and SISO. Over 600 participants attended the event held at the Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre on 24 October 2019.
