Logistics & Cranes Carnival 2018
The Logistics & Cranes Carnival 2018, held on 6 October 2018 at the Trade Association Hub, was organised by the Logistics Alliance, Singapore Cranes Association and Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council. With the aim to highlight the WSH efforts and developments in the logistics and cranes industries, there was an indoor and outdoor exhibition showcasing various technological advancements, such as the use of robotics, to improve safety, health and productivity at work.
Close to 1,000 participants, including industry partners, supporting organisations, their families and members of the public attended the Carnival. In his opening remarks, Guest-of-Honour, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Minister of State for National Development and Manpower highlighted the importance of workers’ safety, health and security in the logistics and cranes industries. He also shared that technology would be a key enabler in improving WSH outcomes, and workers and employers needed to have a safety first mindset not only to workplace safety, but also in dealing with external threats such as terror attacks.

Mr Zaqy also witnessed a Singapore Police Force ground deployment exercise at the Carnival to demonstrate the industry’s preparedness in the event of potential terror threats, as part of the national SGSecure movement.

SCAL kick-starts first Senior Management Walkabout on Work-at-Heights Activities
At the Target Zero Falls Campaign 2018 Launch on 4 October 2018, Mr Zaqy Mohamad, Minister of State for National Development and Manpower encouraged industry partners to conduct senior management walkabouts and ‘Safety Time Outs’ on Work at Heights (WAH) activities during the 3-month campaign period.
Taking the lead in support of the campaign, the Singapore Contractors Association Ltd (SCAL) organised a senior management walkabout at Teambuild Engineering & Construction’s worksite at Valley Spring@Yishun on 9 October 2018. Mr Zaqy, together with representatives from the Housing Development Board, Building and Construction Authority, Ministry of Manpower, Workplace Safety and Health Council National WAH Taskforce and industry partners were invited to the walkabout. Teambuild shared on the technology and innovative processes that were adopted to address WAH risks.
As part of the walkabout, Teambuild shared on the technology and innovative processes that were adopted to address WAH risks, such as:

• Use of improved WAH provisions such as platform ladders, modular scaffolding and grab benches. An Enhanced Parapet Protection System for more effective edge protection was also implemented.

• The leverage of technology such as Virtual Reality for training so that workers can be more familiarised with potential hazards during the construction process, and the use of drones for building inspections to eliminate the need for workers to do so manually at dangerous areas
• Adoption of the Design for Safety and Design for Manufacturing Assembly concepts to address risks at source and plan for safe work at the workplace. With the bulk of construction and installation works done off-site in a controlled manufacturing environment, WAH risks are reduced to achieve better safety outcomes.
