WSH reminder for safe riding amid circuit breaker period
In the current circuit breaker mode, some sectors like Transport and Storage (T&S) continue to experience sustained levels of work activity, especially food and grocery delivery services. The T&S sector has contributed to nearly 30% of workplace fatalities since the beginning of 2020; half of these involved food delivery motorcyclists in road traffic accidents.
The WSH Council would like to remind delivery companies to plan delivery routes in advance and monitor job frequency to prevent rushing. Riders / drivers themselves too, need to play their part, by working together with their delivery companies and paying attention to road safety, in addition to safe distancing when fulfilling deliveries.
Companies and platform providers should put in place extra measures to protect their delivery riders/drivers, such as:
- Implementing safe distancing and contactless deliveries.
- Giving driver the flexibility to work where and when they choose.
- Getting rider/driver to sanitise delivery bags every 2 hours.
- Sharing of official guidelines and regular reminders to stay safe and healthy via mobile and relevant phone apps.
Together we can keep our essential services workers safe and healthy as we weather the COVID-19 storm.
Download WSH training materials on common hazards in the workplace
With the current circuit breaker measures, many companies are leveraging technology to continue operations remotely.
To complement employers’ efforts, the Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Council has prepared a series of pictorial training slides, addressing common hazards in the workplace (e.g. machinery safety, fall from height, and slips, trips and falls), and a safe distancing poster for employers to facilitate WSH training for their workers.
Mr John Ng, Chairman of the WSH Council, advises: “Companies can use this period of time to train their workers, such that they are able to work safely when operations resume. I encourage all employers to get their workers to learn from home during this period to build up their WSH competency and knowledge.”
The WSH training slides, which also include videos and other useful resources, are topic-specific and employers may combine topics as necessary to suit their needs at work.
