Accident Notification: Fatal fire at chemical plant
On 7 Feb 2020, a group of workers was carrying out nitrogen purging of a hydrocarbon pipeline at a chemical plant. The hose connected to the nitrogen supply ruptured due to high pressure and a fire broke out. Two workers sustained burn injuries and were conveyed to the hospital where they eventually succumbed to their injuries.
The Ministry of Manpower has commenced investigations into the accident.
Workplaces are reminded to depressurise pipelines prior to any nitrogen purging. Workplaces are also required to conduct risk assessments and implement safe work procedures for all purging activities.
