WSH INNOVATION AWARDS 2024 (RESULT)

We are pleased to announce the winners for this year’s WSH Innovation Awards. The judging session was held on 21 May 2024.

The WSH Innovation Awards is presented by the WSH Council and is supported by the Ministry of Manpower. It recognises organisations and individuals who have achieved excellence in workplace safety and health.

The winning companies have proven that despite the pandemic, they are still able to innovate and improve safety standards of our industry.

The winners are (segregated into 3 levels – Gold, Silver and Bronze):

Beecham Pharmaceuticals (Pte) Ltd

Project Title: WSH Improvements Through Manufacturing Innovation

Project Summary: GSK Quality Road manufactures Amoxicillin (Amox), an antibiotic. Part of the manufacturing process involves filtering a suspension of Amox through a rotary drum filter and transferring that filtered cake downstream with the aid of a screw conveyor.

Project Title: Double Deck IFR Installation

Project Summary: In February 2023, an innovation team was formed to develop ideas for eliminating potential injuries and property damage while executing projects cost-effectively and on schedule. The team included experts from management, supervisors, and workers, all focused on prioritizing safety and health. Their collective expertise ensured the development of safe execution measures.

Project Title: Pipe Lifter

Project Summary: In April 2023, workers raised safety concerns about the manual handling of pipe spools, citing risks of hand injuries and back strain. Management also worried about space constraints and productivity issues with forklifts. Ideally, this routine activity should present low risks and minimal impact on safety, health, and operations.

Project Title: Enhanced Bevelling Workstation

Project Summary: The innovation team, comprised of experienced workshop personnel, aimed to enhance safety, quality, and productivity in pipe bevelling machine operations. Their technical knowledge and nearly 10 years of experience proved crucial in generating effective ideas to prevent injuries and reduce double handling. This effort was a significant step towards making the job less strenuous and improving overall safety and efficiency.

Project Title: V-Swing Controller

Project Summary: The innovative idea came about when a Lifting Coordinator also served as an experienced and trained rigger and signalman, recognized the ergonomic hazards involved in manually controlling the swing during lifting operations.

Project Title: Portable And Collapsible Working Shelter

Project Summary: The team had to work towards a healthier and more conducive environment for safe execution of jobs so we came up with this multi featured shelter.

Project Title: Catch Canvas

Project Summary: To prevent falling objects while working on vertical pipe flanges, we use canvas, absorption pads, tethering tools with lanyards, and drip trays. Drip trays, though effective for collecting liquids and objects, are heavy and inflexible, making them unsuitable for vertical pipes. Absorption pads and canvas cover gaps but have limitations in liquid absorption and securing tools, while lanyards are limited to smaller tools and pose risks if used with larger tools.
