Dear Valued ASPRI Members,

Launch of Safe Hands Campaign

The Safe Hands Campaign, held in conjunction with Singapore Aero Engine Services Pte Ltd’s (SAESL) in-house safety and health event, was launched on 10 January 2019 by Minister of State for Manpower and National Development, Mr Zaqy Mohamad. More than 100 participants including industry partners, SAESL employees and contractors were in attendance.

The Safe Hands Campaign aims to raise awareness on machinery-related hand and finger injuries at the workplace and the preventive measures that can be put in place. It is the third and last phase of the National Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Campaign 2018.

In his opening speech, MOS Zaqy Mohamad highlighted that hand and finger amputation cases at workplaces have decreased from 140 cases in 2016 to 103 cases in 2018. While this is a heartening sign, more can be done to prevent injuries of this nature at work. He shared two key measures companies could adopt: 1) putting in place pre-emptive processes such as a near-miss reporting programme and 2) enforcing control measures to improve machinery safety at work e.g. machine guards and Lock-Out Tag-Out procedures.

In support of the Safe Hands Campaign 2019 and to spread the call to action “Take Time to Take Care”, the WSH Council has produced a short video on taking proper measures when working with machines to keep hands and fingers safe. The video is available for viewing on the WSH Council’s social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube
